He investigates, but soon finds himself in mortal danger from both the unknown killer and the clannish locals, who resent this outsider meddling in their affairs. 米誌"NewsWeek"(Oct/17/1977)の、JAPAN'S 'UNKNOWN WRITERS'という記事で、 横溝正史が"Master of Suspense"=「サスペンスの巨匠」として紹介されてから、40数年が経つ。『東西ミステリーベスト100』1986年版/2012年版で、ともに国内編総合ランキング第1位。その作品、横溝正史『獄門島』が、ようやく英語圏の海原へ向けて刊行された。横溝正史作品の輸出が、徐々に、でも確実に本格化したと信じたい。 |

"DEATH ON GOKUMON ISLAND"の巻頭に、"横溝正史"の略歴があります。 SEISHI YOKOMIZO (1902-81) was one of Japan's most famous and best-loved mystery writers. He was born in Kobe and spent his childhood reading detective stories, before beginning to write stories of his own, the first of which was published in 1921. He went on to become an extremely prolific and popular author, best known for his Kosuke Kindaichi series, which ran to 77 books, many of which were adapted for stage and television in Japan. The Honjin Murders, The Inugami Curse and The Village of Eight Graves are also available from Pushkin Vertigo. 例のフレーズがどう訳されているのか、気になるところ。 "Out of reason, but it can't be helped." でした。 NHK朝ドラ『カムカムエヴリバディ』で取り上げられた、ラジオ講座「カムカム英語」が、『獄門島』では「カムカムの時間」として記されているのですが、こちらは、"Come On!
